Drunk driver leads police on chase, one dies

Residents in Georgia have good reason to be frustrated by the ongoing problems related to drunk driving. Despite decades of active campaigns that raise awareness and educate people about the dangers of driving after consuming alcohol or using drugs, too many people continue to do just that. As a result, too many innocent people are injured or killed in the accidents that often ensue. This then leaves their friends and family members mourning a loss that was completely preventable.

One example of this can be seen in a recent crash that happened in DeKalb. According to an AJC report, a man refused to pull over when officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The reason for the stop request is unknown. The driver drove away from police at a speed exceeding 100 miles per hour on the freeway with a posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour. In his attempt to exit the interstate, he lost control of his vehicle.

There were two passengers inside the man's car during the chase, one of whom placed a call to her mother. The mother says her daughter asked the man to stop and let her out of the vehicle but he would not do that. Upon losing control of his vehicle, that passenger was killed when the car crashed through a guardrail and down an embankment. The other passenger and the driver were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The man now faces criminal charges for drunk driving and murder, along with other offenses. It is not known if the deceased woman's family will also seek civil compensation.
