What role did a cell phone play in a 4 car accident on I-24?

The Georgia State Patrol is still attempting to determine the cause of a crash that took place around 8 a.m. on a recent Friday morning. Two people lost their lives in the car accident, which ultimately involved four vehicles. The driver of the Ford Mustang that initiated the incident was found dead in her vehicle, clutching her cell phone.

The Mustang was heading west on Interstate 24 in northeastern Georgia. Just about two miles east of the Interstate 59 junction, the 52-year-old woman lost control of the vehicle. When that happened, the car careened across the median into oncoming traffic.

After striking a Chevy Trailblazer, the vehicle went on to slam into a Nissan Altima and the back of a Jeep Patriot. The driver of the Mustang and the driver of the Nissan both suffered fatal injuries in the crash. They did not leave the scene alive. The Jeep flipped over when the Mustang crashed into it. There is no information on the injuries, if any, suffered by those in the Jeep or the Chevy.

Authorities are uncertain what role the cell phone played in this tragic car accident. However, its role is not crucial to the filing of a wrongful death claim by the family of the deceased driver of the Nissan. All that is required is that the family document that the Mustang driver was negligent in a manner that caused or materially contributed to the collisions. If the family is successful in proving negligence, the court may award damages to the family, such as funeral and burial costs and pain and suffering. Further, if the occupants of the other vehicles suffered serious injuries, they may file personal injury claims seeking damages as well.
