A man recently died in a motor vehicle accident in Columbia County. The Georgia car accident involved multiple vehicles along Interstate 20 westbound. The man who died was a soldier stationed at Ft. Gordon.
According to police, the man was by himself in his motor vehicle at the time of the accident. He had stopped in traffic and was about to enter a construction area when a pickup truck suddenly crashed into the back side of his car. The impact of the crash forced his car into the automobile in front of him.
The man had his seatbelt on when the accident happened. However, the impact caused him to fly forward, and his head struck the dashboard. Efforts were still being made to identify the driver of the truck that hit the soldier’s car, as well as any charges to be filed against the truck driver.
The surviving loved ones of the soldier who lost his life in the car accident may opt to file a wrongful death claim against the truck driver, seeking a judgment for monetary damages. If the truck driver ends up being criminally charged and convicted in connection with the fatal accident, proof of the conviction may be presented in a related civil court proceeding to establish liability. Once liability is established to the satisfaction of a Georgia civil court, claims for damages will be determined.
