All of a driver’s attention must be focused on getting from point A to point B without injury or damage to anyone or anything. This can be a challenge for some Georgia residents, considering that being under the influence of anything that can alter a person’s perception is prohibited under the law, but some choose to get behind the wheel anyway. Being impaired can lead to a serious or deadly car accident.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, an afternoon drive became fatal when a 53-year-old man was driving his Buick Century on Georgia Highway 29 at around 2 p.m. A 55-year-old man drove up from behind in his Nissan Frontier pickup. The pickup proceeded to slam into the rear of the Buick, causing it to veer off the road. The car then rolled a few times before coming to rest in a ditch.
Unfortunately, the college custodial supervisor succumbed to the injuries that he suffered in the crash. The driver of the pickup truck has since been charged with serious crimes such as vehicular homicide, DUI and possession of a controlled and dangerous substance — methamphetamine. The alleged impaired driver has been booked and is awaiting trial in the Wilkinson County Detention Center.
While both the Wilkinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia State Patrol continue their joint investigation into this fatal car accident, the family of the victim may wish to consider filing a wrongful death claim against the driver of the pickup truck. This will not bring back the victim, but it may give the family who lost a loved one some sort of peace of mind. Any monetary restitution awarded may help defray any out-of-pocket expenses and other damages associated with the sudden death of a loved one.
